Reviews and Advice

I would like advice to get Shadowrun Survival Guide up to par for a GW award. I know it's not ready for one, I am still transfering from our old web hosting site to the new one.

I would appreciate all advice. This site is a Game Master and Players guide. My content isn't complete yet...

More of the site is updated. I would like to get some feedback before I get too far into the creation of the site. All advice welcome. Tear into me if need be. I can take it.

I need a break from the server switchover anyway.

First impressions - fragmented. The red, white and blue theme is very crisp, modern, clean. On the other hand, the logo is more esoteric, artsy, aged. They don't match. And the search is right at the top for me (over the logo). Yucky. I'd move that to the right and put the logo top left.

The organization seems good. The framework will suit easy navigation. You have a goodly amount of centered text - that is much harder to read than left-aligned, so I would change that. Also, a bunch of it seems to be over-large and/or over-bold. For me, the main text looks like about 24pt, which is usually headline size.

Other than that, there isn't much to say about it until you get more content in. Good start.

I have updated the look of my site. I am having difficulties with the search bar, but that's a Microsoft thing. Hopefully they will be able to fix it for me. I have changed the font size and alignment.

As I get my content in place, I will ask for more advice. Thank you...

Shadowrun Survival Guide

I checked out the survival guide.

Ok, first this is better than the previous incarnnations, but it seems too businesslike, I dunno I would expect a Mecha or grungier look to the site metal, grays, rust.

It is a LOT easier to read. Just when the first page loaded I had to check twice to be sure I was on a game related site.

The Links page took FOREVER to load
Ditto the Form for submitting info.

I like the cleaner font. Keep working on it.

Things that need work:

  • Images need alt tags, especially the title image
  • text in the title image is very blury
  • title of you first page should be something better than 'Home'
  • The hit counter on the fist page is broken
  • Wrap of the 'Welcome to' message changes depending on browser window width.
  • If you are going to reference wikipedia link to the page you are referencing, not the main page of the site.

Been awhile since I've done one of these, myself. I'm mostly a D&D guy, so I won't speak to the Shadowrun system itself, but I can speak for the site. Here goes!

1. Lots of "coming soon" content, very little meat. You'll need to flesh things out more before you get into GW territory.

2. Your house rules page text is all in bold, whereas the rest of your site is in normal text. (edit: I see that the weapons page is also all in bold. Reserve bold for emphasis, keep info text plain.)

3. The navigation bar is a tad inconsistent. I don't like the pink highlight, but it does at least serve the purpose of letting me know where I am - until I vist a secondary page (such as House Rules -> Races). Then, the highlight goes away completely.

Either keep the highlight to let me know what category I'm in (House Rules should stay highlighted in this example), or drop the effect alltogether.

4. The search box above the logo is really bad. It throws off your design and screams "free, crappy hosting" - even if that is not what you have. Seeing as how your site is a Shadowrun site, and not a general web portal, I'd recommend dropping the web search, period. If you simply MUST keep it, try moving it to the bottom of your menu bar there on the side.

Good luck! I see you have done some work, and it is beginning to pay off. Keep at it. Regular Smiley
